Strengthening Cooperation and Management of Global Trawl and Jig / Squid Fisheries

In February 2025 and June 2026, the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) and the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) convened dialogues on high seas trawl and jig fisheries beyond existing regional fisheries management organisations or arrangements (RFMO/As). Participants identified three priorities:

  • Science and data-led collaboration
  • Sustainability through robust reporting
  • Building trust among States, fishing entities, industry and stakeholders

The Second Busan Dialogue agreed to establish the Global Research Cooperative for High Seas Fisheries (GRC High Seas), initially focusing on the South-West Atlantic (FAO Area 41), with seven international partners. Its first task was to compile publicly available data and prepare a joint report on the South-West Atlantic high seas squid fisheries.
